As the ushering team, we welcome the congregation as they enter the sanctuary and show them where to sit, but spiritually speaking, the responsibility of the ushering department is more than just welcoming folks to church. A church ushering is different from secular door keepers like in the restaurant or movie theaters. The ministry of ushering is an important part of the church service, and the goal is to coordinate the entire service from the beginning to the end. It is of paramount importance that God is glorify through our approach and orderliness during church service for our God is a God of order. 1 Corinthians 14:33 NIV “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.”
Church ushering is not for everyone, there are traits of personality that an usher must portrait. An usher is a servant of God and his relationship with God must always be intact. A church usher must be able to manifest all the fruits of the Spirit in accordance with Galatians 5:22-23 regardless of the situation. Galatians 5:22-23 “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” These are the core values of a church ushering department.
A church usher must be able to communicate clearly, confident in service, time management, neat and tidy, ability to multitask, use of proper language, availability and readiness when called upon. An usher must be teachable and pliable. Ushers must spiritually prepare for every church service. An usher must be a great team player. An usher must know that their service is unto the Lord and will never go unrewarded if done properly. 1 Corinthians 15:58 AMP “58 Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord [always doing your best and doing more than is needed], being continually aware that your labor [even to the point of exhaustion] in the Lord is not futile nor wasted [it is never without purpose].
